TOEFL TEST OVERVIEW

What Is TOEFL?
TOEFL means “Test of English as a Foreign Language”. Taking the TOEFL test is a very important part of your journey to studying in an English-speaking country or program.
A Standardized Test, the Test of English as a Foreign Language assesses the English Proficiency of people, whose native language is not English.
It tests the ability to understand North American English. Most Educational Institutes in the US and Canada ask applicants for their TOEFL® Scores. Institutes in other countries, where the mode and language of instruction is English, also use TOEFL®.
Why did the Test Change?
TOEFL® iBT is carefully designed to simulate university life. The new test better measures your ability to communicate your ideas in an academic setting and helps to confirm you are ready to participate in academic coursework and campus life.
It allows you to demonstrate that you can combine language skills by speaking or writing about material that you read and listen to, which is the key to academic success. It also helps institutions select students with the English communication skills needed to succeed.
The Internet-based TOEFL® Test
The TOEFL® Internet-based Test (TOEFL® iBT) tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success while studying.

TOEFL Test
TOEFL test measures your English proficiency when studying abroad, particularly in an English speaking country. The TOEFL internet Based (iBT) Test consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. All four sections are taken on the same day, and the entire test is about four hours long. What is most unique about the test is that it ask you to combine, or integrate more than one language skills just like you do every day.
For example, sometimes you read a passage, listen to a short lecture about a topic, and then speak or write your response. And you can take notes throughout the entire test just like you would in a real academic class.
Language heard on the TOEFL iBT is designed to sound like real-life conversations from university lectures and classes, labs, professors’ discussions with students, study groups and everyday situations. The reading passages are taken from real textbooks and course materials. This method of testing replicates real university classrooms and life proves you can communicate your ideas and confirms you are prepared to begin your academic studies.
The following chart shows the range of questions and the timing for each section. The time limit for each section varies according to the number of questions.

What Is an Integrated task?

TOEFL Coaching Centres In Lagos
The best way to prepare for TOEFL is to plan your TOEFL Prep. A good study plan will be helpful for TOEFL Prep. The first thing that should be done when preparing for TOEFL is to get yourself familiar with the test. TOEFL is an exam you MUST register and pass in case you are aspiring to get admission into any of the native English speaking countries. It is not an easy task to get a high score in TOEFL; it requires total dedication and of course a good TOEFL Prep.

TOEFL prep can be divided into three major parts. The first is gaining knowledge and there is no alternate solution to this part. You have to study hard to do well in the exams. The second important part is to practice well to gain speed. The third but the most important part is to prepare yourself mentally for the exam. This will give you a lot of confidence before and during the exam.
Format of TOEFL Test

The most important thing while preparing yourself mentally for the TOEFL exam is to know the format of the exam. So you should find out which format is available in the test center of your choice, or alternatively which test center has the format of your choice. There are two types of formats available presently under which you can register yourself and take your exam. The first format is iBT or internet Based Test and the second format is PBT or Paper Based Test. Depending on which format is available in your country or location you can get yourself registered and do TOEFL coaching accordingly.

You can study through books, in the coaching centre or with friends. Educational Testing Service (ETS), the administering body for TOEFL exam, has itself published a guide book for preparation for TOEFL exam. A web site and a sampler by ETS are also available for TOEFL prep. There are numerous other books available in our office on TOEFL that will help you prepare well. You are free to ask us for names of these books. Note that the choice of a good textbook is very important.
The second part of mental preparation is about keeping your mental peace during the examination. This will be possible if there are no external factors affecting you. It is important that you get to the test centre early enough, carrying the necessary item(s) for proof of identification with you and knowing the directions from your house to the test centre. This will not only give you confidence but also save a lot of time during the examination.

Time required for TOEFL coaching/preparation entirely depends on the knowledge and skill you may have acquired in the past and the level may vary for students from different backgrounds. You can not exactly define the time required for the study but tentatively it may take up to 2 months for an average student. In this time you have to prepare yourself keeping in mind the format of the exam and also take as many practice tests as possible.

What is Different About TOEFL iBT?
• The TOEFL® iBT test has a new Speaking section, which includes independent tasks as well as integrated tasks in which you need to respond to material that you have read and listened to.
• There is no longer a Structure section, but grammar is indirectly tested in each section.
• Note taking is allowed throughout the test.
• The lectures and conversations in the Listening section are longer, but the language sounds much more like real life. Also, there are new types of questions that measure understanding of a speaker’s attitude, degree of purpose and certainty.
• The Reading section has new questions that ask test takers to categorize information and fill in a chart or complete a summary.
• In the Writing section, typing is required. There is an integrated task in addition to the independent task, and the scoring guides for rating are different from those used for the current test.
